Growing Guide

Successful sweet pea cultivation in Australia begins with timing. In temperate and mediterranean zones, sow seeds directly into the garden from late summer through autumn (March to May), allowing plants to establish roots before flowering in winter and spring. In cool temperate regions, sow from late summer to early autumn (February to April) to avoid hard frosts damaging young seedlings.

Soil preparation is critical — dig beds deeply to at least 30 centimetres and incorporate generous amounts of compost and aged manure. Sweet peas prefer a slightly alkaline to neutral pH of 7.0–7.5, so add garden lime if your soil is acidic.

Before sowing, soak seeds overnight in water or lightly nick the hard seed coat with a nail file to improve germination. Sow seeds 2–3 centimetres deep and 15 centimetres apart at the base of a sturdy support structure.

Water consistently but avoid waterlogging, aiming for deep, infrequent irrigation that encourages strong root development. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Once plants reach 10–15 centimetres, pinch out the growing tip to encourage bushy, multi-stemmed growth and more abundant flowering.

Harvest flowers regularly — cutting blooms every two to three days prevents seed pod formation and dramatically extends the flowering season well into spring.

🤝 Good Companions

Sweet peas grow beautifully alongside nasturtiums calendula and climbing roses which share similar cool-season requirements while attracting beneficial insects that improve pollination and suppress aphid populations. Alliums such as garlic planted nearby act as a natural aphid deterrent protecting the tender sweet pea stems throughout the growing season.

❌ Avoid Planting With

Avoid planting sweet peas near other legumes such as beans and peas as they compete for similar soil nutrients and can share fungal diseases like powdery mildew. Fennel should also be kept well away as its allelopathic root secretions can inhibit sweet pea growth and reduce flowering performance.

🐛 Pests & Diseases

Aphids are the most common pest affecting sweet peas in Australian gardens, clustering on new growth and flower buds — blast them off with a strong jet of water or spray with a diluted neem oil solution weekly. Powdery mildew frequently appears in humid or poorly ventilated conditions, particularly in late spring; improve airflow around plants and apply a diluted milk spray (one part milk to nine parts water) as an effective organic control. Snails and slugs can devastate young seedlings, so apply iron-based snail pellets or set beer traps around the base of plants during establishment.

🌱 Fertilising

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser at planting time, then switch to a liquid potassium-rich fertiliser such as liquid potash or seasol plus every two weeks once flower buds begin to form, which encourages abundant blooming rather than excess leafy growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers during the flowering phase as they promote foliage at the expense of the flowers sweet peas are grown for.

✂️ Pruning & Training

Pinch out the growing tips of young plants when they reach 10–15 centimetres tall to encourage multiple lateral stems and a bushier, more productive plant structure. Train new growth onto the trellis or support weekly by gently guiding tendrils, and remove any dead or yellowing foliage promptly to maintain good airflow and reduce disease pressure.

🔬 Propagation

Sweet peas are propagated exclusively from seed, sown directly into the garden or into deep tubes or toilet roll inners to accommodate their long taproots, which resent disturbance at transplanting time. For best results, soak seeds overnight before sowing, or lightly scarify the hard outer coat with fine sandpaper to improve germination rates, which typically occur within 10–14 days under cool Australian autumn conditions.
